Typically, an image to be retrieved is specified by the content of the image in the database. Given a database of images, the task is to find the images that have similar content to the specified image. Content-based retrieval is often used in image indexing and retrieval and in content-based search and content-based image segmentation.
Content-based image retrieval is often performed in a visual query mode, where an image is placed on a screen of a computer. This mode was first used in software systems such as Internet image search engines. The query mode involves specifying the content of the image to be retrieved, and the search process is essentially performed on the screen.
In a multimedia database, such as a movie database or an image database, content-based image retrieval is often performed with the assistance of some additional information about the images. For example, some movie databases store which actors are in the movie and where they are, and so are able to search the database for images of the actors. Similarly, some databases store where each image was taken, and so are able to search the database for images of a certain location.
The present disclosure provides a novel method for content-based image retrieval from a multimedia database, which can be performed in a visual mode.
